In a statement issued in Karachi yesterday, Pakistan Broadcasters Association expressed deep concern and shock over the shutting down of cable networks in Gujranwala division by Punjab Revenue Authority (PRA). This action has denied the entire region access to TV channels, which means they have no access to news or entertainment. This is a serious threat to the people's right to information.
PBA supports all government initiatives to increase the tax base fairly and on merit through lawful means. However, heavy-handed approach should be avoided and nothing should be done at the expense of freedom of speech. PBA urges government of Punjab and PRA to immediately restore cable network operations in the region and to resolve the issues through mutual consultation and deliberations.-PR
