Perturbed over delay in shipment of consignments owing to routine traffic chaos in the city, textile exporters have urged the Sindh government to complete the Southern Bypass project without any further delay. In a letter sent to the provincial additional chief secretary, Pakistan Hosiery Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PHMA) said that both the Northern Bypass and Southern Bypass were planned in Karachi Master Plan (1975-85), to facilitate the movement of the up-country bound traffic from the city seaport, the former was completed in 2007, while the Southern Bypass project continues to linger on since many years.
Referring to the ban imposed on the movement heavy vehicular traffic on the city roads during the day, the PHMA said that the restricted movement of heavy vehicles on the roads ie from 11 pm to 6am together with inordinate delay in completing the Southern Bypass has created immense difficulties for exporters in carrying their consignments to the seaport. The association through its letter demanded of the government to allow movement of heavy vehicles round-the-clock.
