The newly elected President Arif Alvi resigned on Wednesday from his National Assembly seat.
The president-elect tendered his resignation from Karachi’s NA-247 constituency in which he had emerged winner in the general elections held on July 25. According to local media reports, he has sent his resignation to the NA secretariat.
On Tuesday, Alvi was elected the 13th President of Pakistan after defeating opposition backed Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA)chief Fazlur Rehman and senior Pakistan Peoples Party's nominee Aitzaz Ahsan.
According to results provided by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), Alvi bagged 353 votes. The other two candidates- Rehman and Ahsan secured 185 and 124 votes respectively.
Members of the Parliament, Senate and the four provincial assemblies voted in the presidential elections through secret balloting.
Alvi is expected to take oath as the president after the incumbent President Mamnoon Hussain's tenure ends on September 8.
