Google Maps has upgraded offline navigation for the iOS version of its app, enabling users to search for places while they are not connected to any wireless network. It used to be only possible to download maps before visiting a place without wireless coverage, but not to search on them. The new function was introduced to Android devices in November and was enabled for the first iPhones in December. Now offline navigation is generally available for all iOS devices.
Navigation without an internet connection is only possible using the maps that have been downloaded in advance. Users can search these maps offline for special sites such as stores, restaurants, cafes, petrol stations or tourist attractions.
Offline navigation is popular among those who travel abroad and do not wish to use expensive data roaming.
