An inmate of Karachi Central Prison on Monday managed to escape in the broad daylight, posing a big question mark on performance of the jail administration. According to police sources, Muhammad Hafeez, 35, son of Bashir Ahmad, was imprisoned in a kidnapping for ransom case on September 9, 2013. He was taken to Jail Colony for a routine work where he reportedly dodged the policemen and managed to escape from the highly sensitive location.
Shortly after the news was flashed on television screens, the authorities suspended the Jail Superintendent Murtaza Shaikh on the charges of 'negligence' in performing his duties and also decided to lodge an FIR against other personnel responsible for this security lapse.
It may be pointed out that the authorities have repeatedly claimed that they have taken extraordinary security measures in and around the prison by deploying law enforcement personnel, raising its boundary walls, installing CCTV cameras and mobile jammers.
Sources said that inmates of the prison include hundreds of high profile criminals and as such any security lapse on the part of jail authorities will prove detrimental for the city's peace, particularly when Karachi operation was under way for the eradication of terrorists and hardened criminals.
