Push notifications are a familiar sight to most smartphone users, allowing apps to alert them in the screensaver about events, news, alerts, status updates or other information.
Firefox has just announced that it will enable similar messages from websites. Since the release of its latest version, Firefox 44, the browser can display pop-up notifications even if the tab containing the website remains closed at the time.
The prerequisite is, of course, that users agree to receive the notifications in the first place. Websites supporting the so-called Web Push service will ask users if they are interested in receiving notifications.
The messages can be turned off for individual websites or completely by changing the settings in the menu under "Options/Content."
