In line with Prime Minister's Vision of "Green Pakistan" "Pakistan Navy - Mangroves Plantation Campaign" was launched in the Coastal Areas of Sindh and Balochistan provinces to mark International day of Forests. Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral Muhammad Zakaullah inaugurated Pakistan Navy Mangroves Plantation Campaign as chief guest.
A large number of senior military and civil officials including representatives from business community, journalists, World Wildlife Fund (WWF), International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), officials from Federal and Provincial Forest Departments attended the inaugural ceremony.
Admiral Muhammad Zakaullah highlighted that deforestation of mangroves has not only affected biodiversity of our coastal areas but also livelihoods of coastal communities. While asserting on the need to focused attention and co-ordinated efforts from all walks of the society, the Naval Chief said that Pakistan Navy's Mangroves Plantation Campaign was an initiative to plant additional mangroves as well as to create awareness amongst masses about the significance of mangroves in a bid to support the nature. Mangroves occur at crossroads where oceans, freshwater and land realms meet. They are among the most productive and complex ecosystems on the planet, growing under environmental conditions that would kill ordinary plants very quickly. They are vital to coastal ecosystem, prevention of sea intrusion and sustaining marine life.-PR
