China looking at ways to issue SDR bonds: Central bank head

02 Apr, 2016

China's central bank governor Zhou Xiaochuan says the country is "actively" looking at ways to issue bonds denominated in Special Drawing Rights (SDR), the currency basket unit used by the International Monetary Fund. Speaking at a meeting on Thursday in Paris, Zhou said China will soon start to use SDR units as well as US dollars to report the country's foreign reserves, according to a transcript posted on the People's Bank of China (PBOC) website on Friday.
In the speech, Zhou urged broader use of the SDR for a stable and resilient international currency system. The IMF admitted China's yuan into its benchmark currency basket in November last year, a victory for Beijing's campaign for recognition as a global economic power.
