Karachi Traffic Police Department lacks impound yards for parking of detained vehicles without registration, fitness certificates, route permits and transmitting smoke in environment, said DIG Traffic Dr Amir Ahmed Shaikh on Sunday.
DIG Amir said in order to overcome environmental pollution and to comply with the orders passed by the High Court of Sindh, Karachi Traffic Police is continuously launching special campaigns against unfit vehicles violating traffic law, but a low number of vehicles could be impounded due to unavailability of impound yards.
Talking to PPI, DIG said that the action against such shoddy vehicles was being continued. He said as per Motor Vehicles Ordinance 1965, they can issue traffic violation tickets to vehicles as well as impound them under Section 115.
DIG said they had written several letters to Karachi Commissioner, requesting him to allocate appropriate separate vacant grounds or place to Karachi Traffic Police for using as traffic impound yards in order to resolve this genuine problem of traffic police but nothing could be done in this regard.
DIG said due to non-availability of impound yards, the traffic police is constrained to detain limited vehicles which is benefiting negligent drivers of public transport, particularly minibuses who are reluctant to follow the traffic law.
Amir said the detained vehicles could not be parked at Traffic Sections or roadsides as it could be an open threat to the public property.
