THE RUPEE: slight gains

A firmer trend seen on the money market on Monday in the process of trading, dealers said. The rupee sustained week-end's rally, picking up two paisas versus the dollar for buying and selling at Rs 104.70 and Rs 104.72 respectively, they said.
The rupee picked up 20 paisas in terms of the euro for buying and selling at Rs 119.10 and Rs 120.10, they added. In the first Asian trade, the dollar was on the defensive, after Friday's firm US jobs report failed to shift the broadly held view that the Federal Reserve will remain cautious on interest rate hikes this year. The dollar slipped about 0.2 percent to 111.45 yen, after earlier skidding to as low as 111.32, its nadir since March 21.
The euro edged up 0.1 percent to $1.1389, not far from a 5-1/2-month high of $1.1438 struck on Friday. The dollar was trading against the Indian rupee at Rs 66.28, the greenback was at 3.8730 in terms of the Malaysian ringgit and the US currency was at 6.4876 versus the Chinese yuan. Inter bank buy/sell rates for the taka against the dollar on Monday: 78.40-78.40 (previous 78.40-78.40).

The US dollar resumed trading at its last week closing of Rs 105.50 and Rs 105.80 as its buying and selling rate, respectively. The dollar could not sustain and declined to Rs 105.30 on buying side while it did not observe any change and ended at the opening level of Rs 105.80 on selling side, the dealers said.
Similarly, the local currency showed strength and improved on buying side while it stayed unchanged on selling side against the pound sterling that was traded at Rs 148.50 and Rs 149.70 on buying and selling counter as compared to the Saturday's closing of Rs 148.70 and Rs 149.70, they added.
The dollar opened at Rs 106 (buying) and Rs 106.20 (selling) against same last rate. It did not observe further change in the second session and closed at Rs 106 (buying) and Rs 106.20 (selling). Pound Sterling opened at Rs 158 (buying) and Rs 158.50 (selling) against same overnight value. It did not observe further change in the evening session and closed at Rs 158 (buying) and Rs 158.50 (selling).
