This is apropos an editorial carried by Business Recorder sometime ago. The newspaper had made a comment on a news report which had said that Federal Finance Minister Ishaq Dar while chairing a meeting to review the status of public debt and the arrangements in place for debt management accused 'certain individuals' of creating misperceptions in relation to the country's debt situation and added that it is the responsibility of the government to place facts before the public.
Nothing did he, however, say anything about how the PML-N government would go by the fiscal responsibility or limitations law. Not only does the rising size of debt pose a question to the sustainability of country's repayment ability, it also overshadows long-term economic policymaking. Dar Sahib needs to give a serious thought to these two critical aspects of economic policymaking without any further loss of time.
