As many as 14 deaths were reported on national highway in the year of 2015 owing to illegal U turn violations. The improper and dangerous U-turns are the most serious threat to road safety and can result in serious injuries and fatalities. Around 64 improper and dangerous U turns had been completely removed in last couple of months.
In the area of Sector Okara , 33 , Sector Multan 28 and Sector Rahim Yar Khan 03 U turns have been closed by Motorway Police Central Zone adopting the policy of zero tolerance. The NH&MP has closed the U turn in the area of Lahore, Manga Mandi, Pattoki, Okara , Sahiwal, Chichawatni , Mian Chanu, Khanewal , Multan , Basti Malook, Lodhran , Bahawalpur, Ahmed Pur East , Rahim Yar Khan and Sadiq Abad.
This is said by DIG Mirza Faran Baig while observing special enforcement campaign about illegal U turns. The SSP Masroor Alam Kolachi was also present on this occasion.
DIG Mirza Faran Baig said the consequences of an accident caused by U-turns are often fatal.
The DIG said that the illegal U Turns on national highways is permanent hazard for the free flow of traffic and road safety. He instructed the Sector Commander to enhance the co-ordination with NHA to remove the Illegal U turns and encroachments.
He lauded the performance of N-5 Central officers and further advised them to put every effort to meet the high standards of professionalism to brighten the name of the department.
