IO seeks formation of JIT to interrogate Waseem Akhtar

25 Jul, 2016

An investigation officer (IO) on Sunday demanded to form a joint investigation team (JIT) to further interrogate Karachi mayor-designate Waseem Akhtar, who was arrested earlier this week.
"The matter is of a high profile nature, hence a JIT consisting of members of intelligence agencies and law enforcement agencies is required to be constituted," the investigation officer Altaf Hussain wrote to home department.
Waseem Akhtar was arrested on June 19 after anti-terrorism court (ATC) rejected his bail plea in a case against former petroleum minister Dr Asim Hussain for allegedly providing medical aid to terrorists and criminals at his hospital.
Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) condemned the arrest of Karachi mayor-designate, alleging that Waseem was arrested on the basis of findings of "biased JIT".
On June 21, Sindh High Court (SHC) handed over Waseem Akhtar to police on a five-day physical remand.
