SC dismisses Mirza's plea

20 Aug, 2016

The top court on Friday dismissed the plea of former Interior Minister Sindh Zulfikar Ali Mirza who had urged the apex court to declare proportionate allocation of reserved seats for local councils under Section 18-A of the Sindh Local Government Act (SLGA) 2013 arbitrary and discriminatory.
In response to Mirza' plea filed under Article 184 (3) of the Constitution, the Supreme Court had issued notices to Attorney General for Pakistan, Election Commission of Pakistan and Advocate General Sindh. Dismissing the plea on Friday, a two-member judge bench led by Justice Mian Saqib Nisar said that the matter in hand is not maintainable. The court said that the petitioner has the right to invoke the concerned High Court jurisdiction for interpretation of the challenged law, if intended.
