Parliamentarians pledge to address issue of under-nutrition

Parliament-arians belonging to PTI, JUI, JI and QWP parties pledged their support to address the issue of under-nutrition in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa during a briefing of parliamentarians organised by United Rural Development Organisation (URDO), a member of Scaling Up Nutrition Civil Society Alliance (SUNCSA, Pak) with support of Micronutrient Initiative (MI).
Opening the briefing Zaheer Khattak, SUNCSA, Pak Executive Council member and Executive Director of URDO welcomed the participants and shared the objectives of meeting.
He said, Parliamentarians can play an important role in scaling up nutrition programs as they are the key decision-makers of policies, governmental plans and budgets.
Dr Meher Taj Roghani Deputy Speaker of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly said that malnutrition is serious issues which require urgent attention. She said, "We will put our best efforts for implementation of breastfeeding law by-developing Rules of Business and non-fiction of infant feeding board for implementation of KP Breastfeeding law". She said we would introduce legislation for mandatory food fortification and Universal Salt Iodization.
She added the KP government is committed to reduce infant and under five mortality in the province. This will be done by addressing malnutrition in the province with support of development partners". She admired the role of Micronutrient Initiative for holding briefing on nutrition and emphasised for follow up meetings.
Dr Naseer Nizamani Country Director Micronutrient Initiative (MI) shared the situation of malnutrition in Pakistan particularly focusing on Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
He said that Pakistan is facing a malnutrition crisis that is amongst the worst in the world and has not improved for decades. This needs to be urgently addressed in order to safeguard the country's future development and prosperity. It's a simple fact that nearly half of all children in Pakistan are malnourished, and this undermines their mental and physical growth, as well as the country's prospects.
He said that the province has a dangerously high rate of nutritional stunting among children under age 5 (47.8%) as compared to 43.7% of the national average. The prevalence of wasting is 17.3% as compared to 15.1% of the national average. As per World Health Organization's standards, a national average of 15% or above is labelled as an "EMERGENCY".
Aslam Shaheen SUN Focal Point/Chief Nutrition Planning Commission highlighted the role of parliamentarians in improving nutrition situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Dr Mubarik Ali, Member Food Security and Climate Change Planning Commission emphasised on Implementation of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Provincial Integrated Nutrition Strategy and the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Protection of Breastfeeding and Child Nutrition Act 2015". He also stressed on allocation of adequate resources for nutrition programs/projects in the upcoming budget.
The MPAs while sharing their views highlighted the importance of integrated approach to respond the issue of under nutrition in the province. It was recommended that district and sub district level consultations should be organized involving local administration, health officials and civil society to create widespread awareness about the issue of under-nutrition. Female nutrition should be prioritised and awareness raising programs should be initiated involving media, Lady.
The briefing was attended by Zarin Zia MPA, Miraj Hamyoon, Askar Perviaz MPA, Sardar Babak MPA, Mehmood Jan MPA, Yaseen Pir Muhammad Khan MPA, Nagina Khan MPA, Rashida Riffat MPA, Maleeha Ali MPA, Amna Sardar MPA, of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly from different political parties, representative of different government departments including health, agriculture, social welfare, food , representatives from Unicef, World Food Program, members of SUN Civil Society Alliance and journalists.
