THE RUPEE: no major changes

The rupee was almost unchanged against the dollar on the money market on Friday in the process of trading, dealers said. The rupee shed two paisas in relation to the dollar for buying and selling at Rs 104.81 and 104.83 respectively, dealer said.
In the final Asian trade, the dollar remained on tenterhooks on Friday, on track for a modest weekly rise ahead of Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen's eagerly awaited speech that some believe could provide clarity on whether US interest rates will rise this year. The dollar index, which gauges the greenback against a basket of six major counterparts, edged down 0.1 percent to 94.718, on track for a modest gain of 0.2 percent for the week. The dollar was trading against the Indian rupee at Rs 67.04, the US currency was available at 4.0150 in terms of the Malaysian ringgit and the greenback was at 6.6644 versus the Chinese yuan.

According to the currency dealers, the dollar resumed trading on a negative note and remained under pressure in the absence of buyers' interest. As a result, the dollar could not sustain and declined to Rs 106.00 and Rs 106.25 on buying and selling side against Rs 106.05 and Rs 106.40 of Thursday, respectively.
The rupee also marginally improved by five-paisa on buying side whereas it stayed unchanged on selling side in relation to the British pound. The pound was traded at Rs 138.80 and Rs 139.80 on buying and selling counter as compared with the day earlier closing of Rs 138.85 and Rs 139.80, respectively, the dealers said.
The dollar opened at Rs 104.50 (buying) and Rs 105 (selling) against same last rate. It did not observe further change in evening session and closed at Rs 104.50 (buying) and Rs 105 (selling). Pound Sterling opened at Rs 137.50 (buying) and Rs 138 (selling). It did not observe further change in the second session and closed at Rs 137.50 (buying) and Rs 138 (selling) by the end of second session.
