Is Saarc relevant?

Speaking to the participants of Saarc finance ministers' moot, prime minister Nawaz Sharif has underscored the need for greater cohesion among member states. He has reportedly said that the interdependence calls for a greater cohesion amongst the Saarc member states for working together for economic prosperity in the region to eradicate poverty, illiteracy and other social evils.
According to him, increasing interdependence and the shared goals and common concerns led to creation of South Asian Association of Regional Co-operation (Saarc) three decades ago. The prime minister has made very pertinent points in relation to relationships between Saarc member states. He, however, avoided to make any comment on the role of the main stumbling block towards the growth of Saarc as a vibrant and productive body. Certainly it is India that seeks to become a regional hegemon and therefore not interested in addressing the issues responsible for stagnation of Saarc.
