Punjab government here Friday told the Lahore High Court that Punjab University's syndicate meeting challenged before it had been postponed for an indefinite period. Assistant Advocate General Anwar Hussain further told the court that Governor Rafiq Rajwana due to his out of city commitments had asked the university to defer the syndicate meeting and new date would be announced by the governor later. The court adjourned the hearing till September 27.
It may be added that Punjab University College of Information Technology's Principal Mansoor Sarwar and former Registrar Dr Aurangzeb had approached the court pleading that the Acting Vice Chancellor Dr Mujahid Kamran had been acting beyond his powers.
Advocates Safdar Shaheen and Saad Rasool representing the petitioners said under the law only a permanent vice chancellor had the power to approve policy and administrative matters of the university but the respondent acting VC was going to head syndicate meeting unlawfully. The university's counsel argued that the governor being chancellor had issued a notification to convene the syndicate meeting. He said the acting VC had been exercising his powers in light of the chancellor's direction.
