The Sindh Chamber of Agriculture (SCA) has requested the Sindh Government to ensure that the sugar mills begin sugarcane procurement and crushing by October 1. The meeting of the SCA demanded that the provincial government enforce the Sindh Sugar Factories Control Act according to which the crushing season is scheduled to start from October 1 every year.
The meeting presided over by Senior Vice President Syed Aijaz Nabi Shah was attended by farmers from Karachi, Sanghar, Sukkur, Nawabshah, Ghotki and other districts through the videolink.
The meeting further demanded Chief Minister Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah to fix Rs250 per 40 kilograms price of sugarcane, citing financial hardships suffered by growers due to low prices over last few years.
"To begin the cane crushing in the mills and fix a price which is acceptable to the farmers, the Sindh Government should immediately call the joint meeting of the farmers and the millers," the SCA urged.
The SCA also called for an early fixing the support price of the wheat crop at Rs1,500 per 40 kg so that the wheat farmers did not face troubles when the harvest season begins.
Among other representatives of the farmers' community, Zahid Hussain Bhurgari, Mir Abdul Karim Talpur, Haji Shahzad Khan, Abdullah Rafey, Mohammad Khan Sarejo, Mir Sikandar Talpur and Muhammad Khan Panhwar attended the meeting.
