The chief justice of Lahore High Court on Tuesday sought a detailed reply from the federal government by October 5, on a petition seeking cancellation of the MQM registration as a political party. The chief justice, however, referred the matter to a full bench already hearing the case regarding ban on the activities of the MQM chief.
The petitioner's counsel, Ahmad Awais, argued that the government did not decide an application filed with the request to cancel the MQM registration. He said recent statements of MQM chief have established that the party is no more faithful to the country. He asked the court to order the government to cancel registration of the MQM as a political party.
A standing counsel told the court that any citizen could submit an application to the federal government on any matter. However, he said, it was the prerogative of the government to decide the same. At this, the court directed the government's counsel to submit a comprehensive reply in the said petition.
