Lawyers' movement of 2007 blocked way of martial law: former CJP

Former Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry said on Wednesday that protest is the democratic right of Imran Khan and every citizen of the country. He said that lawyers' movement in 2007 in which judiciary was restored has blocked the way of martial law.
He was addressing the book launching ceremony of Hamid Khan's book 'A history of the judiciary in Pakistan' published by Oxford University Press on Wednesday. Iftikhar Chaudhry said that now it is the duty of the democratic governments that they should work for the welfare of the people and provide relief to the people. He said that the book portrays lawyer's account of how superior courts have functioned since the country's existence, is not only informative but also revealing.
Former Chief Justice of Pakistan Jawwad S. Khawaja appreciated the author for penning the history of judiciary in an objective manner and termed him as an "Insider" as he undertook detailed study of history and development of the judiciary in the country. Managing Director OUP Ameena Sayid said that Hamid Khan is a close witness to the shifting panorama with in the judicial courts in the country, of which he has an insider understanding.
