NY commuter train derailment leaves 33 injured

10 Oct, 2016

A New York City commuter train sideswiped a maintenance train and derailed, leaving 33 people injured, authorities said Sunday. Governor Andrew Cuomo toured the site of the accident, which happened Saturday evening on the Long Island Rail Road as the passenger train was travelling east with hundreds of people aboard.
Four of those injured are in serious condition. The mishap occurred 30 kilometers (20 miles) east of the city.
The work train, used for track maintenance, "violated the clearance" of the passenger train, the first three cars of which derailed. The trains were headed in the same direction.
Both tracks remained shut down Sunday. Crews worked to clear them for the Monday rush hour commute.
