Partly Facetious: Now the award controversy

15 Oct, 2016

"So Dar sahib's award as best finance minister of South Asia had nothing to do with the International Monetary Fund?"
"Nope, but the fault for this misunderstanding lies with the Prime Minister's office; if you recall a statement from our chief executive's office issued on 8 October claimed that "Emerging Markets (EM), the newspaper of the IMF/World Bank Annual Meeting has declared Ishaq Dar as Finance Minister of the year 2016 for South Asia..."
"Poetic justice I say."
"It's poetic justice that our Prime Minister or officials paid salaries from our tax money, officials dedicated to his office, got it wrong?"
"No, it's poetic justice because the Prime Minister ignored the other two gentleman who also got awards - the visionary Ahsan Iqbal from EM and the Governor of the State Bank from Euromoney, whose ownership as well as that of EM is common as per the website..."
"Visionary Ahsan Iqbal?"
"No other Pakistani politician thinks that far ahead - chair of the party maybe but not politicians."
"Don't be facetious."
"But to be fair to our very lovely Parveen Rashid..."
"You really need to have your keyboard looked into, I mean its Parvez not Parveen."
"Sorry, but anyway his Press Information Department got it right, because their press release said the EM is the newspaper of record of the IMF/World Bank annual meeting and that is precisely what is claimed on the Global Markets website."
"And to be fair to Dar I would like to say that I did write to the EM management and requested them to provide the criteria used to determine Dar sahib's award and they sent me a link to the letter itself which is long on adjectives, favourable adjectives, so I wrote back to them and asked them for the criteria, you know what exactly led them to conclude that Dar sahib is the best?"
"And what they say?"
"I am awaiting their response and will let you know as soon as they tell me."
"Are you being facetious?"
"Not today simply factual."
