The Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) on Monday recommended the names of four additional judges of Lahore High Court (LHC), and three additional judges of Peshawar High Court for confirmation. The Commission also proposed the name of Nazeer Lagu for his appointment in Balochistan High Court (BHC) as additional judge.
Chief Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali chaired the meeting of the JCP which was also attended by senior judges of the top court, Chief Justices of the Baluchistan, Lahore and Peshawar High Courts, Federal Law Minister Zahid Hamid and other members of the Commission. Sources disclosed that recommendations of the LHC's four additional judges for confirmation include Justice Khalid Mahmood Malik, Justice Mushtaq Ahmad, Justice Masood Abid Naqvi and Justice Chaudhry Muhammad Iqbal. All these justices tenure is expiring on November 7.
Similarly, recommendations for confirmation of the PHC's three additional judges includes; Justice Muhammad Younas Thaheem, Justice Qalandar Ali Khan and Justice Muhammad Ghazanfar Khan. However, the commission has postponed the matter of 14 fresh appointments as additional judges in the LHC till November 3. Later, a press release from the Supreme Court said that the JCP deliberated upon the list of nominees against the vacancies initiated by the LHC's Chief justice for elevation as additional judges. "During the course of meeting, the Chief Justice of Pakistan observed that in order to select the best out of best persons, some additional names may be added to the list of nominations already initiated by the LHC's Chief Justice," the press statement said. It added that the matter was therefore, adjourned for November 3, 2016 to consider fresh nominations as well as the list of nominees already submitted by the LHC chief justice.
