Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has said that Sukkur Barrage constructed by British engineers has completed its life and Sindh government is working to rehabilitate it. Now, his government was working to rehabilitate it and by the time planning for constructing new barrage is underway, he added. He was talking to British High Commissioner Thomas Drew who met him here at the CM House, said a statement on Friday.
He said that Sukkur Barrage was the lifeline of agro-economy of the province. The Sindh government has been repairing it time to time but everything has its life and now its life is over but even then it is quite strong and irrigates lands of big and small growers and also extinguishing the thirst of people, animal and birds living in its command area, he added.
Sharing the break through, the CM Sindh said that the World Bank has conducted study for its rehabilitation of the barrage which would enhance its life for another 20 to 30 years. "Simultaneously, we are seriously exploring the avenues to arrange funds and construct new one for future requirement," he said. The British High Commissioner said that it was really a unique barrage and should be rehabilitated. "We would support you whatever we could do for it," he said. The Ambassador also discussed education and health sectors with the CM Sindh and assured him their full support. Deputy High Commissioner Ms Belinda Lewis was also present in the meeting.
