Parliamentarians' assets: ECP devises mechanism for scrutiny

03 Dec, 2016

The Election Commission of Pakistan has devised a mechanism for scrutiny of annual asset statements submitted to it by the parliamentarians. Sources said the process would be initiated from the scrutiny of senators' asset details and would be followed by the scrutiny of asset details of the members of National and provincial assemblies.
On the basis of information provided by parliamentarians, the scrutiny would be held in sectors including agriculture, real estate, industry and investment in the offshore companies. The ECP is yet to start the scrutiny process of the asset declarations filed by the parliamentarians, as earlier it had been decided to start the process from December 01.
An official of the ECP told Business Recorder here on Friday that the mechanism for scrutiny of declarations has been reviewed and is in process to get approval from the commission. A Performa has been worked out in connection with the scrutiny of assets. The political finance wing and confidential wing of the ECP will be merged and will be given the shape of a full-fledged directorate. This directorate will work directly under the Election Commission. According to sources, the political finance wing of the commission will carry out scrutiny work in collaboration with the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), Auditor General and other relevant departments.
