Reacting to the impression that students of the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) are using drugs, which also claimed the life of Shahmir Asif Bajwa, the administration on Thursday made it clear that no such activity takes place on the premises of university.
According to the varsity spokesman, Shahmir was a third year BSc Hons student who was found 'unresponsive' in his bedroom on the evening of December 12 and was taken to National Defence Hospital where doctors pronounced that he was expired a day earlier. The police and concerned departments were investigating the matter but the cause of death was yet to be determined, he added.
"We have a zero tolerance policy against all intoxicants and conduct regular vigilance and oversight to prevent availability of drugs and illegal substances on the campus premises. LUMS has two layers of security and hostel staff, and a firm approach is followed in case any student is found involved in violation of rules," the spokesman claimed.
He said well-trained security personnel ensure security on entry and exit points of the university by observing all the SOPs. The campus is well covered with CCTV and all reports of drug violations are followed up rigorously. When contacted ASP Cantt Division to take her version as to why the police are taking so much time for ascertaining the cause of Shahmir's death, the operator said 'Madam ASP' is unable to take the call.
