'All zoos, wildlife parks house 6,268 animals in Punjab'

All the zoological gardens and wildlife parks house 6,268 animals which included 1350 mammals of 45 species, 4,828 birds of 95 species and 90 reptiles of 11 species. Lahore Zoological Garden is the leader in captive stock of animals while Bahawalpur Zoological Garden tops in caging birds among all the wildlife parks and zoological gardens.
This was disclosed by the Director General Wildlife & Parks Punjab Khalid Ayyaz Khan while talking to media persons, here on Wednesday. He said that number of animals and birds keep on changing as a result of birth or mortalities.
"We have directed the in charges of all the zoos and wildlife parks to submit a report about surplus animals and birds in their respective area so as to shift these animals/birds to those wildlife parks where they are not present," Khalid Ayyaz Khan added.
The in charge of wildlife park will also submit report about the capacity of their facility for housing the animal or birds so animals could be shifted to the places which have empty enclosures.
Khalid Ayaz Khan told that the department is trying its level best to breed healthy races of animals on scientific basis and in this regard, mammals and birds are being shifted under exchange programme from one to another zoo and wildlife park to avoid any complication in breeding. He further said that the department is considering about DNA of mammals and birds to update that whether which animal should be shifted to zoo or wildlife park for pairing.
