Unveiling of 118MW coal-fired power plant of FPCL

The inauguration ceremony of FFBL Power Company Limited (FPCL) was held on Monday at Port Qasim, Karachi. Management of Fauji Fertilizer Bin Qasim Limited (FFBL) envisaged the Coal Power Plant back in 2012 due to the ongoing energy crisis faced by the Country. This coal power plant is capable to generate 118 MW of electricity and has entered into long-term off-take agreements for the period of 30 years. It will provide 52 MW of electricity to K-Electric on sustained basis along with meeting electricity and steam requirements of Fauji Fertilizer Bin Qasim Limited's (FFBL) fertilizer plant.
Speaking on the occasion, the distinguished Chief Guest, the President of Pakistan Mamnoon Hussain gave felicitations to the entire Fauji Group and FFBL Power Company's project team on the timely commencement of coal power plant operations. As one of the earliest coal power plant in the country to become operational, Fauji Foundation has maintained its legacy to remain at the forefront of Pakistan's development.
On this landmark occasion, various foreign and local dignitaries were in attendance including Muhammad Zubair Governor of Sindh, Lieutenant General Khalid Nawaz (Retd) Chairman FPCL, Lieutenant General Muhammad Haroon Aslam (Retd) CE&MD FPCL, Lieutenant General Javed Iqbal (Retd) CE&MD Designate FPCL, Syed Aamir Ahsan Group General Manager Finance FPCL, Muhammad Nauman Younas Project Manager FPCL, Ambassador of South Korea and Senior management of KE Lenders and other partners.
The plant is capable of using both imported and indigenous coal as its fuel. The project features a completely covered coal yard with extensive plantation and strict environmental control system to have minimum impact on the environment. It is imperative to mention that the most challenging task for the project team was to undertake this massive project on a Non-Turnkey EPC (Engineering, Procurement & Construction Contract) approach.
The continuous efforts of Project engineering, construction team and supply chain department for ensuring timely supplies at most compatible prices, role of administration and other supporting departments were also appreciated by Lieutenant General Khalid Nawaz (Retd), Chairman FPCL.
Haroon Aslam commended the project team for their strong in-house technical capabilities coupled with vigour, enthusiasm and hard work. He stated that the successful completion of this plant is FFBL's contribution towards Pakistan's Power self-sufficiency.
To complete and commission a unique and capital intensive coal based power generation facility within 2 years was challenging, said the Group General Manager Finance, Aamir Ahsan. He specifically acknowledged and expressed gratitude to all the local financial institutions, who are lenders in this landmark project, for their timely support throughout the various stages of the project. He further added that support of contractors and partners like Northern Heavy Industry, Hyundai Heavy Industries, General Electric, ABB, DESCON, NESPAK, OMS and K-Electric proved invaluable in realising this dream.
The inauguration ceremony was concluded by unveiling the plaque and distribution of shields by the President of Pakistan Mamnoon Hussain. The hosts of the event were applauded for their efforts in making the inauguration event a huge success.-PR
