ECSV stresses 'community involvement' to improve education, schools

A meeting of Education Committee of Sindh Vision (ECSV) was held to propose recommendations for improvement of education in schools of Sindh. The committee has unearthed that there were 41724 primary schools with just 87085 teachers in Sindh while 53% schools among them were without drinking water, 49% did not have toilets & 66% schools did not have electricity.
They agreed to recruit 6000 primary teachers announced by Govt. of Sindh purely on merit by means of written test and interviews and for the process three canters including Sindh University Testing Centre, IBA Sukkur and Iqra University were finalized. The recommendations for the amelioration of education at primary school levels would be sent to the Chief Minister Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah.
The meeting was presided by the vice chancellor Professor Dr Fateh Muhammad Burfat held at the Committee Room, Vice-Chancellor Secretariat, University of Sindh, the meeting was attended by renowned educationists and members of Think Tank of Education Committee of Sindh Vision Dr Mehboob Shaikh, Dr Muhammad Memon, Dr Fahmida Hussain Memon, vice chancellor Sufi University Bhitshah Professor Dr Parveen Munshi, Professor Dr Muneeruddin Soomro, Professor Dr Hakim Ali Kanasro, Dr Ameer Ali Abro, Professor Dr Nizamuddin Channa, Professor Dr Nek Muhammad Shaikh, Professor Dr Hamadullah Kakepoto, Dr Shahzad Ahmed Memon and Abdul Majeed Panhwar.
The meeting deliberated on the agenda items that included recruitment of 6000 teachers announced recently by Government of Sindh, lack of basic facilities in schools, dropout in schools, out of school children and opening of schools. The Sindh Vision Education Committee has been mandated by Chief Minister Sindh to critically examine the status of school education in the province, identify gaps, spot lacunae and formulate action plan to plug the pitfalls.
Addressing the meeting, Professor Dr Fateh Muhammad Burfat said that University of Sindh possessed excellent infrastructure and most qualified human resource adding that more than 100 teachers working at University of Sindh had done their doctoral studies from the leading universities of the western world. Dr Burfat said that he was working day in and day out to improve the situation at the campus.
Dr Burfat said, "We plan to practice zero tolerance on the issue of admissions and induction of the teachers in the university; from now onwards the admissions of the students and the selection of teachers would be purely on merit."
Dr Burfat said that the education system of the province could not be ameliorated without the participation of the communities and neighbourhoods. He said that his experience abroad, at multiple times, had convinced him that only mainstreaming of masses in the decision making and implementation phases of management of schools could guarantee their success.
A report shared in the meeting revealed that there were 41724 primary schools, 2316 middle, 1706 secondary and 293 higher secondary schools in Sindh. Whereas, the number of primary teachers was 87085, secondary teachers 34588, middle school teachers 12278 and the number of higher secondary teachers stand at 10219.
