THE RUPEE: modest gains

KARACHI: The rupee managed to recover modestly in terms of the dollar in the money market in process of trading, dealers said. The rupee gained 10 paisas versus the dollar for buying and selling at Rs 107.10 and Rs 107.30, they said. The rupee also picked up 40 paisas in relation to the euro for buying and selling at Rs 113.80 and Rs 115.30, they said.
The euro touched $1.0608, its lowest level against the dollar since Jan. 19, while the dollar touched 113.85 yen, its highest against the Japanese currency since Feb. 1. The dollar index, which measures the greenback against a basket of six major currencies, rose as much as 0.3 percent to an 11-day high of 101.010. The index later pared gains and was last up about 0.2 percent at 100.880.

According to the currency dealers, the dollar demand remained intact that kept the rupee under pressure.
The dollar's buying and selling rate improved from the overnight closing of Rs 107.20 and Rs 107.50 to Rs 107.40 and Rs 107.70, respectively, the dealers said.
However, the rupee showed stability and stayed unchanged on buying side at Rs 133.50 against the British pound. However, it remained depressed on the selling side and ended at Rs 135.25 as compared to the day earlier closing of Rs 134.30, they added.
