Power from Thar coal plants: Dar convenes Ecnec meeting to approve project

Finance Minister Ishaq Dar has convened a meeting of the Executive Committee of National Economic Council today (Friday) to consider and approve project for evacuation of power from two 660MW Thar coal power plants as well as projects of water and transport sector. Sources said that the meeting is likely to consider seven projects with three each for water sector and energy sector and one for transport and communication sector.
Water sector projects are said to be Lower Indus Right Bank Irrigation and Drainage Project (LIRBP) Stage-I (2nd Revised PC-1), extension of Right Bank Outfall Drain from Sehwan to Sea (RBOD-II) (2nd revised) and Balochistan Effluent Disposal into RBOD (ROBD-II) (1st revised updated PC-1). The Ecnec is also expected to consider and approve energy sector projects of 500 kV Chakwal Substation as well as 7th secondary transmission line and grid station (GEPCO) and evacuation of power from two 660MW Thar coal based SSRL/SECL power plants at Thar (PC-1).
Sources said that transport and communication sector project expected to be taken by the ECNEC is revised project for acquisition of land for Faisalabad-Abdul Hakeem Motorway M-4 (138-km). This is the second meeting of the Ecnec in a short span of time as the previous one was held last Tuesday.
