Scores of people mostly Pakhtuns staged a demonstration on Sunday outside Karachi Press Club to denounce the violent incident that occurred in Punjab University (PU) Lahore in which 5 students were injured.
The protesters accused the Islami Jamiat Talba (IJT) of the attack on the Pakhtun Cultural Show in which atnrr, a typical Pakhtun dance, was also being organised under the aegis of Pakhtoon Students Federation (PSF) on March 21. They alleged that IJT workers forcefully halted the 'peaceful' cultural show and thrashed the students severely, leaving dozens injured.
"We are here to express solidarity and sympathy with those injured in that clash," said the central general secretary of the PSF Sher Muhammad Afridi speaking to the protestors.
He said it was an attack on Pakhtun culture and values indeed. He urged the concerned authorities to take action against those involved in 'sabotaging' the cultural show. He said such incidents particularly in educational institutions, would cause divisions among the nation.
"We shall continue to celebrate our culture anywhere in the country as it is our right," he said.
Awami National Party (ANP) Sindh chapter general secretary Younis Buneri, Ali Rehman and Sardar Shahid of National Youth Organisation (NYO) and workers belonging to PMAP, PPP, PSF etc also attended the demonstration.
