02 Apr, 2017

Moments before a press conference for the release of Dr Hassan Zafar Arif by Teachers' Society, two of its members were arrested by the law enforcement agencies (LEAs) on Saturday outside Karachi Press Club (KPC). Dr Riaz, head of teachers' society, and another member Mehr Afroz Murad were detained by LEAs allegedly for being in contact with MQM-London leadership.
Both were taken to an undisclosed location for interrogation. Representing teachers' society, Noreen Haider apprised the media that she has no idea whether Dr Riaz and Mehr Afroz were in contact with the MQM-L leadership, however, Dr Hassan Zafar Arif has remained their teacher and the society has concerns on his arrest. "We came to demand the release of Professor Dr Hassan Zaffar Arif but now, after arrest of associates, we are demanding the release of three people", she added. In a similar fashion, Rangers had arrested Professor Dr Hassan Zafar Arif on October 22 outside KPC where he was due to address a press conference.
MQM-L's denial: Meanwhile, MQM London's Nadeem Nusrat on Saturday categorically denied that the two teachers, who were arrested by the law enforcement agency, were linked to the party. According to details, two teachers of Karachi University namely Dr Riaz and Dr Meher Afroz were arrested by law enforcement personnel near Karachi Press Club, where they were to address a press conference on Saturday. Nadeem Nusrat stated that the arrested teachers were not workers or party members of MQM London. He said that MQM London workers were being arrested and several of them were kept at Central Jail. Earlier, it was being reported that the two arrested teachers were sympathisers of MQM London.
