Five people were killed and nine others were injured when a rockslide hit a house in Baldia Town, here on Thursday. Police said the incident occurred in the hilly Gulshan-e-Ghazi Town during early hours. As soon as the rockslide hit the ill-fated house, call to rescue the victims was aired from loudspeaker of nearby mosque. The neighbours initiated evacuation work in haste, before the rescuers could reach the site. Later, rescuers arrived but faced difficulty due to narrow lanes of the area. However, they managed to pull the victims out of rubbles.
The victims were identified as: Zameer Gul, 45, his wife, their 11-year old son Abdullah, daughter Iqra, 16, and a guest. Muskan, 13, Roma, 16, and a 7-year old Zohra were among the injured. The victims were shifted to Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK) for medico-legal formalities and treatment, respectively.
The residents fear that 10 to 12 houses still remain under possible rockslide threat. They urged the government to remove these heavy rocks as soon as possible. In October 2015, thirteen people, mostly children, died due to rockslide that hit their shanties in Gulistan-e-Jauhar area.
