Organ-transplant scam: another suspect granted remand

11 May, 2017

A judicial magistrate on Wednesday granted three-day remand of another suspect of illegal organ-transplant scandal Abdul Majeed to Federal Investigation Agency (FIA). Earlier FIA produced Abdul Majeed before the magistrate and stated that the suspect had been arrested on the hint of one of the prime suspects of the scandal Dr Fawad Mumtaz. The Investigating Officer (IO) told to the court that suspect Majeed was an agent of Dr Mumtaz and his main responsibility was to hunt out foreign clients for organ transplantation.
The IO said the suspect in initial interrogation disclosed that a Dubai based client, Muhammad Rashid, had lost his life during a kidney-transplant surgery carried out by Dr Mumtaz. The officer asked the court to grant physical remand of the suspect for further investigation in the case and court allowed the remand of the suspect accordingly. The FIA had arrested Dr Fawad Mumtaz, Dr Altamash Kharal, Umar Draz and Muhammad Shahzad during a raid at a house in EME Society, when they were allegedly transplanting kidneys to some foreigners.
