May 12, 2007 carnage: Sindh PA wants culprits to be brought to justice

13 May, 2017

Sindh Assembly on Friday adopted a resolution to condemn the massacre of 50 innocent citizens on May 12, 2007, amid demands from the PML-F and PTI's legislators for bringing perpetrators of that bloodshed to justice. Senior Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Nisar Ahmed Khuhro, who moved the resolution, said: "The house condemns the murder of innocent people on May 12, 2007."
He said that the public had turned up to accord welcome to former Chief Justice, Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry in Karachi but they came under gunfire. He termed the May 12 mayhem as the 'biggest atrocity.' He said that a dictator was ruling the nation, who waved fist in the air and said he showed his power in Karachi that, Khuhro said, was against the public. He said that the police officials were not given arms and powers by the then government hence they just looked to the killings as silent spectators. He said that the armed terrorists opened fire staying around Shaarey Faisal and other avenues and roads.
PML-F's woman legislator, Mehtab Akbar Rashid urged the PPP government to go beyond presenting resolution and arrest the terrorists who killed the innocent people on May 12, 2007. She said that the evidences of the violence could be garnered from media channels, as how the militants murdered innocent people. She said that the May 12 bloodshed was an open exhibition of 'might is right'.
PTI's Samar Ali Khan asked the PPP to bring the culprits of the May 12 carnage to justice without any discrimination. He said that thousands of people were killed in the last few decades in Karachi alone, as insecurity has grown, phenomenally. He called the bloodshed as sad and expressed concern over inaction against the perpetrators of the carnage during the last 10 years.
MQM's Faisal Subzwari told the house that his party has been non-violent and urged the legislators to adopt a pacific policy to promote coexistence in the society. He claimed that his party lost 14 workers on that day. He also showed a picture of PPP's leader Sherry Rehman standing with an armed person. He said that the MQM was trapped into the conspiracy. The house was adjourned till Monday morning.
