Celebration of Filmmaking talent in Pakistan

International short film competition ’48 Hour Film Project’ that was executed in Pakistan for the first time in 2018 organized an awards and screening night in Karachi to showcase the hard work and passion displayed towards filmmaking by the 21 teams who had participated in the said competition from Pakistan this year. The said event was held at the Shiny Toy Guns Head Office in Korangi, Karachi.

Famous names from the entertainment industry such as actor par excellence Sanam Saeed, who also served as a member of the jury panel, and Adeel Husain graced the event with their presence last night and showed keen interest in supporting filmmaking talent of Pakistan.

"Having been part of the 48 Hour Film Project since the past 5 years, I am really happy that this finally happened in Pakistan, and the work I saw by the filmmakers makes me proud! I really do believe these films can definitely compete at the international level" said City producer of the said project Khayyam Khalid.

The event commenced with an opening speech by the City Producer of the Project ‘Khayyam Khalid’ followed by speeches from two key members of the local Project Partner ‘Shiny Toy Guns’ Asad Ul Haq and Asma Humayun. Khayyam Khalid, Asad Ul Haq and Asma Humayun appreciated the great response received in the first year of the project and were hopeful to keep the momentum building for the project in 2019 and years to come.

“Opportunities like the 48 Hour Film Project play a positive role in encouraging filmmakers to showcase their talent on both local and international levels” said top commercial director of Pakistan Asad Ul Haq who also served as a member of the jury panel for the said project. “It gives them (filmmakers) the confidence to push the envelope and achieve the impossible. I believe that participation of 21 teams in the first year of the project is a big achievement for the local chapter, each team tonight (November 9) is a winner for me”

The jury member consisted of top commercial director ‘Asad Ul Haq’, one of the most well known names from the local entertainment industry ‘Sanam Saeed’, advertising guru ‘Imtisal Abbasi’ and BAFTA recipient, globally renowned cinematographer ‘Nick Knowland’.

The project kicked-off in Pakistan on the 19th of October when 21 teams shot, edit and submitted their 4-7 minutes long films by the 21st of October, 2018. These 21 films were screened at Cinepax Karachi for two consecutive days for general public viewing, and most importantly to serve as a token of appreciation and confidence for the members of the 21 teams who challenged themselves to produce a film in just 48 hours.

It was a night that witnessed a celebration of great filmmaking talent, and served as a reminder to the local entertainment industry that there is an abundance of untapped talent that needs to be explored and highlighted to help the industry reach new heights of success.
