Traders on Friday feared about sugar shortage in the city following a suspension by the mills to the wholesale market. Chairman Karachi Wholesale Grocers Association (KWGA), Anis Majeed said the mills have stopped supplies of sugar that is feared to create shortage of the commodity. Neither the mills are supplying sugar against the payment by traders nor they are striking new deals for the commodity supplies, he said.
"A serious concern has grown on sugar crisis in the wake of sugar supply suspension," he said, adding that "the wholesale market left with a sugar stock for just one or two days," after which sugar is believed to become scare in Karachi. The wholesale rate of sugar, at present, is Rs 49 per kg, he told, but warned that the sweetener is unlikely to be selling on the same rates if supply continued to remain suspended. He asked the Commissioner Karachi to intervene and revisit the price list of sugar issued for markets.
