Defence Day marked across Punjab

07 Sep, 2017

The Defence Day of Pakistan was marked on Wednesday across the province of Punjab with a renewed pledge to safeguard the motherland against all external and internal threats. It was on this day in 1965 when Indian forces crossed international border in the darkness of night to attack Pakistan but the nation foiled nefarious designs of the enemy. Special prayers were offered after 'Fajr' in mosques for progress and prosperity of the country. Quran Khawani was also held for the martyrs.
Floral wreath was laid at the memorial of martyrs and prayers offered for defence and security of Pakistan. In Lahore, a simple but graceful ceremony was held at Mazar-e-Iqbal, in which Punjab Rangers assumed the charge of Mazar's security. Garrison Commander Lahore, Maj. Gen. Muhammad Aamir was the Chief Guest on the occasion, who laid a floral wreath and offered Fateha at the national poet's grave. Former army Chief Raheel Sharif paid a visit to the grave of his brother, Major Shabbir Sharif Shaheed in Lahore.
Major Shabbir Sharif Shaheed is the only person ever who received both the Nishan-e-Haider and Sitara-e-Jurat for his bravery in the war. He was also a recipient of Sword of Honour. Major Shabbir Sharif Shaheed, elder brother of General Raheel Sharif (retd), was martyred at Sulemanki Headworks during the 1971 war and was awarded Nishan-e-Haider on his extraordinary gallantry.
