Managing Director of Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KW&SB) on Sunday accused anti-social elements and miscreants of choking the city's sewerage lines deliberately to cause overflow of filthy water on various roads.
"Anti-social elements and miscreants are involved in throwing gunny bags filled with stones and bricks in several gutter lines and sewerage manholes at various points across the city creating artificial overflowing of sewerage water on roads," Syed Hashim Raza Zaidi said in a detailed statement. He said the bags containing construction material are thrown in open drains and manholes that is a conspiracy against his department.
Taking notice of the incidents, Hashim has asked the KW&SB officials to devise a foolproof mechanism building working relationship with the local bodies' representatives and concerned agencies, to thwart this nuisance.
On Sunday, gunny bags packed with stones and cemented bricks were recovered from an 18 diameter sewerage line in Gulistan-e-Johar Block-15. Similarly, two days back, another main sewerage line was chocked near FBR building in Gulistan-e-Johar. Due to that, roads were submerged by filthy sewerage water creating immense problems for the residents and the commuters. However, when the KW&SB officials initiated repair work on the site, they found various gunny bags containing bricks and stones in the main line. These kinds of malicious activities are causing huge financial losses to the KW&SB which is already facing fiscal problems, he said.
Similarly, sewerage lines near Regal Chowk Saddar are also choked for the last many days.
MD KW&SB also requested the general public to lodge complaint with nearby police station or with the KW&SB emergency centre whenever they notice such activity being carried out in their respective locality.
