Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif is set to inaugurate the southern loop of Lahore Ring Road on December 22 as the development works have been completed and the project is ready to be used by commuters, said sources in the Lahore Ring Road Authority. Intelligent transportation system (ITS) and closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras have been installed throughout the road for monitoring and security purposes, they added.
The earlier deadline was set as July 2017 which could not be met due to successive litigation on land acquisition process. It may be noted that the project was conceived a decade back but failed to materialize because of political reasons and lack of resources.
The southern loop is 22.35 kilometres starting from Kamahan to Adda Plot (Raiwind) consisting of 15 subways for pedestrian and vehicular traffic. This loop will improve traffic management besides reducing the travelling time between north and south parts of the city.
