Government hospitals in Karachi: SC takes notice of conditions

The Supreme Court has decided to work on Saturdays for the first time as Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar is setting an example by hearing public interest matters relating to social sector at the apex court registries of Lahore and Karachi.
On Monday evening, taking a suo motu notice over existing condition of public sector hospitals in Karachi, Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar issued directives to all departments concerned and medical superintendents of the metropolis to appear in person with report pertaining to availability of equipment in the hospitals.
Medical superintendents have also been asked to come up with detailed report of emergency machinery including ventilators, oxygen, incubators, OTs facility, angiography machines, CT scan, MRI ambulances, besides details of life-saving drugs and the medicines that are being provided to the patients free of cost and a list of medicines which they have to purchase from the market.
Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar has further sought details about availability of required qualified doctors and nursing staff from medical superintendents, saying, "All the medical superintendents of government hospitals are required to be present in-person along with referred detailed reports reflecting the positions of respective hospitals."
Taking another suo motu notice on admission in private medical colleges in Sindh, Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar called report from authorities concerned with notice for personal appearance including chief executive officers and owners of private medical colleges in Karachi. Hearing of both the matters has been fixed for January 13 (Saturday) at Karachi Registry of the apex court. Meanwhile, Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar called report from the concerned authorities while taking suo motu notice over blockade of public roads during VVIP movement in the country.
