Bureaucratic or political foot-dragging on FATA reforms

15 Jan, 2018

How unfortunate it is that after 10 months of foot-dragging on FATA Reforms, the PML-N has acted on only one out of a total 24 proposals approved by the federal cabinet on March 2, 2016 due to the political isolation of PML-N after the tragic rape and murder of young girl in Kasur.
A Business Recorder news item in this regard is spot-on: "PML-N today is left with Maulana Fazal-ur-Rehman and Mahmood Khan Achakzai as allies in the centre who have expressed their vehement opposition to FATA reforms." The resignation of PML-N chief minister Nawab Sanaullah Zehri in Balochistan fully explains the enormity of challenges that the party faces ahead of the scheduled 2018 elections. It is about time PML-N revisited its approach to the critical FATA reforms without any further loss of time; it must strive to achieve this objective before elections in order to brighten its increasingly bleak electoral prospects in FATA, KP and Balochistan in particular.
