After inclusion of Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act, police on Tuesday registered three separate first information reports (FIRs) against over 100 suspected students for being involved in clashes between two student groups in Punjab University (PU) on last Monday. The cases were separately lodged with Muslim Town Police Station by the Chief Security Officer of the PU, Station House Officer (SHO) of Nawankot Khawaja Hasan and SHO of Sanda Malik Taimur.
The clashes between Islami Jamiat Taleba (IJT) and Baloch and Pakhtun students of the PU had escalated in the wee hours of Monday and subsequently a chemistry lab of the varsity was set on fire amid battle between the groups. The fight had broken out while preparations for the university's yearly Pioneer Festival were underway. On Monday, a PU spokesperson said the varsity had decided to rusticate at least 35 students allegedly involved in the clashes after PU Vice Chancellor Dr Zakaria Zakir ordered to take discrimination action against the responsible.
Meanwhile, the administration had issued a letter to all relevant heads of departments to suspend the admissions of 35 students, he said.
