PIA flight steward held on smuggling charges

11 Mar, 2018

A flight crew of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) was arrested by French customs authorities after the recovery of contraband heroin from his possession. According to details, a flight steward Tanveer Gulzar of flight PK-750 (Milan-Paris) was taken into custody by French customs authorities when he was leaving for hotel from airport. He was accused of having three kilogram of contraband heroin in his possession.
Meanwhile, PIA spokesman confirmed the arrest of flight steward Tanveer Gulzar, saying that airline had suspended him till the finalization of the investigation against him and if he was proven guilty during investigation, he would be removed from service. However, no details have yet been furnished by the French Authorities regarding quantity and value of drugs claimed to be found, PIA spokesman said.
Needless to mention, this was not the first reported incident, last year some 14 kilograms of heroin was recovered from PIA flight PK-785 at Heathrow airport and there were number of such incidents reported in past. Although Pakistani investigators are confident that this heinous crime cannot be possible without the involvement of PIA Engineering staff (Karachi and Islamabad) and ASF staff, no action has so far been taken neither against PIA Engineering staff nor ASF to avoid earning bad name not only for the airline but country as well in the future.
