The Supreme Court on Monday sought a detailed report from the federal government within 15 days on a petition regarding the Kalabagh Dam plan. A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar took up the plea filed by Barrister Zafarullah Khan of Watan Party.
During the course of hearing, Justice Umar Ata Bandial observed that there is no doubt that the dam should be constructed but provinces are yet to reach a consensus on this issue.
Earlier in 2016, the Supreme Court dismissed a petition filed by Engineers Forum about the construction of Kalabagh Dam, which would generate 3,600 megawatts if constructed.
A three-member bench headed by the then Chief Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali disposed of the case, saying that the construction was postponed on technical grounds.
The court further remarked that the issue of Kalabagh Dam is being politicized and that three provinces are not in favor of its construction.
The court also stated that it will not interfere in policy matters as no one''s right is undermined whether or not the dam is constructed.
