Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KW&SB) on Wednesday threatened various government departments of disconnecting water supply if they failed to pay Rs5380.5 million outstanding dues within the next seven days. The warning came at a time when the met office has forecasted a fresh spell of heat waves in the metropolis in coming days. Moreover, the citizens have already been subjected to unannounced power cut by the K-Electric in this scorching summer season.
The KW&SB officials said that the board has sent final notices to various government departments to pay outstanding dues piled up to Rs5380.5 million, creating financial woes to the already resource-constrained water utility. The actions against the defaulting departments are being taken in compliance with the Supreme Court orders.
Statistics released by KW&SB show that District Council Karachi has to pay outstanding dues of Rs1780.5 million. Public Health Karachi has Rs808.6 million dues, SITE limited Rs559.3 million, Public Health Department Thatta owes Rs307 million, Clifton Cantonment Board owes Rs297.8 million, Government Colleges Rs246.2 million, District Jail Malir Rs225.1 million, Shah Latif Town Rs198.8 million, New Subzi Mandi Superhighway owes Rs169.8 million, Navy Maintenance Karsaaz Rs152.9 million, Government Schools Karachi Rs146.8 million, Korangi Cantonment Board Rs128 million, Civil Aviation Authority owes Rs95 million, Works and Services Department Sindh Rs73.5 million, Faisal Base Rs55.9 million, Swedish College Rs32 million, Hockey Club of Pakistan Rs31 million, YMCA Rs3.8, Faisal Cantt Board Rs28 million, Sindh Government Hospital Korangi No-5 Rs27.5 million, Karachi Grammar School Clifton Rs0.48 million, Karachi Club owes Rs1.78 million, and Government College of Technology SITE owes Rs13.6 million of outstanding water dues to KW&SB.
