The Supreme Court Tuesday issued notices to former President General Pervez Musharraf (retd), former President Asif Ali Zardari, former Attorney General and former Justice Malik Qayyum and National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in a petition filed against controversial National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO).
A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Saqib Nisar issued the order while hearing a petition filed by Feroze Shah Gilani regarding the NRO.
The NRO is a controversial ordinance issued by General Musharraf granting amnesty to politicians in cases registered from January 1, 1986 to October 12, 1999. The Ordinance was declared unconstitutional by the top court on December 16, 2009.
During the hearing, the Chief Justice inquired from the petitioner as to the purpose of the petition, observing that the Supreme Court has already declared the NRO null and void. However, the court issued notices to the respondents seeking their replies and adjourned the hearing for a month.
