Appointment of law secretary challenged in Supreme Court

09 May, 2018

A bar member challenged the appointment of provincial law secretary before the Supreme Court for being made in violation of Punjab Civil Servants Act, 1974. "Dr Hassan Najami, 75, stood retired as assembly secretary in January 2004 and was re-employed as law secretary in October 2009 in violation of settled laws," stated Zafar Iqbal Kalanuri advocate in his petition. Later, he says, the contract of Najami was extended for two years in 2011 and the government kept extending his contract even in 2017.
He argued that the issuance of the impugned notification by the government was illegal and unlawful. Advocate Kalanuri questioned, how a retired person from one department can become useful and helpful for other department. He therefore, prayed to the court to declare the appointment of the respondent as secretary law as illegal.
